Fake-Out Alfredo

If you grew up around yummy southern cooking, like whole milk, or use butter in everything, then this may not be the recipe for you. If you are like me and grew up drinking skim milk and eating 99% fat free ground turkey you may want to try this one out.

Fake-Out Alfredo has 3 ingredients: 1/2 cup Cottage Cheese, 1 tsp Lemon Juice and Garlic Powder to taste.

Blend all three ingredients together (add in a tbs of milk if you are having trouble getting it to blend)

Then serve over pasta. For this recipe I used brown rice pasta.

White Russian Chocolate Pudding

With the overwhelming popularity of Drunk Gummies, I thought I might create another adult dessert! I attempted to make Red Wine Rock Candy, the science geek in me thought it would be a ton of fun and nostalgic, but it turned out to be a big fail.

So I give you White Russian Chocolate Pudding:

Ingredients:
1/2 cup raw sugar
3 tbs unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/8 tsp salt
2 1/4 cups milk
1/4 cup Vodka
1/4 cup coffee liquor
1 tsp vanilla extract

Place all ingredients in a sauce pan and whisk over medium heat until well blended.

Once the ingredients are well blended turn up the heat to high. Constantly stir the mixture until it begins to thicken and stick to your whisk. Remove from heat.

Select your favorite martini glass :)

Serve chilled.

Shoe Redo

I have this super comfy pair of aerosoles that I haven't worn in a long time because the heels look like my dogs used them as a chew toy.

I saw a great idea on pinterest where someone covered their scuffed up heel in glue and then rolled it in glitter to cover the scuffs. While I was walking through Michael's Craft Store I saw Tulip Fabric Paint in a color close to my shoes! I used painters tape to keep my lines clean.

I painted on three coats allowing an hour drying time between each coat. The photo above shows one coat of paint (notice the scuff marks and tears have already disappeared!)

The final result! They are not perfect when you look up close, but they look pretty fab on my feet!

My 8 month old Peed in the Potty

You read that correctly. My 8 month old peed in the potty! I was recently introduced to the book "The Diaper Free Baby" by Christine Gross-Loh. The book explores Elimination Communication.

My husband who is skeptical of the whole process said "I think you just happened to be in the right place at the right time" and I told him that is the whole point.

The author breaks the book down into a few categories Full Time, Part Time and Occasional EC. Which means you can utilize this method in the time you have available. As a full time working mom I fall under the occasional category. A friend of mine who introduced me to the book (and also has an 8 month old) and is doing this full time has not had to change a poopy diaper in over a week.

What I have learned from the book is:

Get to know your baby and recognize when they need to go to the bathroom. (The book recommends leaving your baby's diaper off or putting them in a cloth diaper so you and your baby know when they are wet) This method doesn't really work for me so I just keep an eye on his diaper to determine what patterns he has. I have realized my son tends to pee after he drinks a bottle. So at that time I give him a pottytunity (as the book calls it)

If you know your baby is going to the bathroom (be it in a diaper, the toilet or on your floor) give them verbal cues. I give my son a psssss sound to associate with peeing. The hope is that eventually if I put him on the toilet and make the sound it will cue him to pee.

A rule I have set for myself is that if he seems frustrated or doesn't want to be on the potty, pick him up and try again at another time. Luckily so far he seems to enjoy sitting on the potty.

I have spent years and lots of money trying to find the perfect mascara, but whenever I wanted my lashes to really stand out I always added on fake lashes. When the advertisements for Latisse started a few years ago I was skeptical, but heard from a few people that it worked. So I finally took the plunge and purchased two boxes (about an 8 week supply) and guess what... it works!!! The photo below are my lashes before and then my lashes after 6 weeks using Latisse. I am now just using it a few times a week for maintenance.

Read your labels!

The new year is upon us and many of us make our yearly resolutions to become healthier and lose weight. I was asked to write this article as an eye opener for many. Yes we have been told to read our labels but how many of you are actually doing this. While there are many components to reading labels I am going to focus on sugar for this article. I hope that the references below will help you be more aware before you purchase foods especially if you are feeding young children.

When reading labels do you know what ingredients are actually sugar?

Look for: malt, sorghum, sucrose, fructose, maltose, glucose, dextrose, high fructose corn syrup, maple, brown sugar, powered sugar, brown rice syrup, cane juice.

or sugar alcohols: mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol

Look there's sugar in my yogurt: A great article on how much sugar is in yogurt. We typically think of yogurt as a healthy option. The photo above shows 8 teaspoons!

Remember every 4 grams is equal to 1 teaspoon.

More Sugar Shockers:

Apple cider 81 grams (20 teaspoons),

Instant coffee with sugar cappuccino flavored 64 grams (16 teaspoons),

Fruit punch powdered mix 95 grams ( 23 teaspoons)

Arizona Iced Tea: 16 ounces = 48 grams sugar, 180 calories

Snapple Antioxidant Water, Agave Melon: 20 ounce bottle = 32 grams sugar, 140 calories

Glaceau Vitamin Water: 20 ounce bottle = 32 grams sugar, 125 calories

Gatorade Bring It, Shine On, or Be Tough: 16 ounces = 28 grams sugar, 100 calories

Instant Cocoa: You’d probably expect hot cocoa mix to have cocoa, or maybe powdered milk, highest on its list of ingredients. But for Swiss Miss Mocha Cappuccino and Marshmallow flavors, the first and second ingredients are sugar and corn syrup, with cocoa listed as the fourth ingredient.

Swiss Miss Mocha Cappuccino or Marshmallow flavors: 1 envelope made with 6 ounces water = 19 grams sugar, 120 calories

What can you do?

Read your labels, keep an eye out for the sneaky sugars and choose products without added sugar.

Make your own, to enjoy yogurt without the added sugar, make your own flavored yogurt starting with Greek Yogurt (it has 4.5g sugar per half cup and it is not from added sugars, but the sugar found naturally in the milk) and add in fruit.

Drink more Water, Hydration is very important in overall health and wellness add in a slice of lemon or lime to give your water flavor and save yourself the calories of the drinks listed above.

Decoding your DSLR Camera

One of my New Year Resolutions is to figure out how to use more than just the auto setting on my DSLR. I turned to my good friend and fellow April Mommy Cassie Sperling of Studio None Photography, located in San Diego, CA for help. (She is also famous and was recently on the Dr. Oz show which is super cool)

So, you have this really cool DSLR camera, but you don't know how to use it outside of the auto mode. You find yourself playing around with it, but then realize, you can't take a photo in the dark. "I paid all this money for a nice camera and it won't take a picture in the dark..." That was me not too long ago. I purchased my first DSLR in 2008 and have taught myself, without any courses, how to take better photos.

Exposure is your best friend in the photography world. Literally, just like your best friend, you find the exposure is sometimes way too bright for your liking, or too dark. Like your friendships, there needs to be a balance. Looking through your viewfinder (through the eye piece), you will see a meter on the bottom that lights up. Your goal here is to place the bar in the center of the meter to capture the best exposed photo. You can get creative with this feature if you want to purposefully over or under expose a photo.

"How do I get that bar to move?" you ask. There are a couple of ways to move that bar. ISO speed, shutter speed, and your f stop (or aperture), will help you create the perfect photo. Low light situations call for a higher ISO speed. The higher your ISO, the more light is let into your lens. Remember what I said about balance? High ISO speeds produce a lot of noise in your photos (the grainy pixels), so make adjustments with your f stop and shutter speed to create a nice balance. If you have editing software, such as Adobe Lightroom, you can reduce the noise in your photos and won't have to worry as much about a higher ISO speed. If you do not have editing software, play around with your settings, get them on the computer ASAP so you can get instant feedback and make adjustments in the future.

Your shutter speed works in the opposite direction as compared to the ISO. The higher the fraction on your shutter speed, the faster the shutter opens and closes, and the less light is allowed in through the lens. Sharp photos are produced with a faster shutter speed to reduce camera shake and to increase image stability. In combination with the ISO, your exposure is almost set.

You are in love with the photos that focus in on a subject, but are nice and blurry in the background, but how do you take that photo? (note from Mrs. Alexandria, I have always wondered this I am so excited to finally have the answer) The f stop, or aperture, determines the blur of the background, as well as how much light can be let into the lens. A low number for your f stop, such as 4.0, allows the lens to bring in more light to the camera. I always start out setting up the f stop to produce the image I am trying to capture, then I adjust the ISO speed and shutter speed.

Now that you are balanced, what are we missing? Our subject! The most important aspect of your photo. Kids are the perfect subject to test out your photography skills. With their fast action, they keep you on your toes, and will keep you adjusting your settings on your DSLR.

I have found, if you want a child to cooperate with you to get the perfect shot, start out by getting down on their level. Less intimidation is key...well, that and bribes too. Play with the angles as you capture your images; at the same time, interact with the kid. Sometimes it is hard to forget they are just sitting there building up large amounts of energy. Try some photos from up high, down low, to the side, from behind, or even straight on. Practice will make you a better photographer and it will also help you develop your own style. Remember, the more photos you take, the more you can learn about your camera, its settings, and your own style. Go grab your DSLR and start playing!

Pinterest Project: Crayon Art

I found another fun project idea on pinterest, crayon art! It looked like a simple enough project, attach crayons to canvas and melt with a hair dryer or put crayons through a glue gun and melt. Above you can see the first method which my sister created this weekend (The top photo she placed pieces of crayon on the canvas which was laid flat and the hair dryer was held above the canvas and the second the canvas was upright to allow the crayon to melt downward). I decided to use the glue gun approach (I only splattered a little across my face, ouch!)

First I went online and googled silhouette stickers. I found a few I liked and printed them out. I then cut them out and traced them onto my canvas. I then filled in the picture with a black fabric marker.

Next, I covered my drawing with cardboard and painters tape.

I set my up my project in a cardboard box and used a blank canvas to test out how the melted crayon was going to flow.

The melted crayon came out in splatters, drips and runs, there really was not much consistency to it. I had to use a pencil behind each crayon to help push the crayon through. As you can see in the picture the process got a little messy (thank goodness it mostly stayed contained in the cardboard box)

Here is my final result!

Baby its cold outside: what to do with a 7/8 month old

With the winter months upon us several mommies I know with babies in the 7/8 month range are wondering what to do when its too cold to play outside, and with all of the winter germs taking the tots to play groups doesn't seem like the best option.

Here are some ideas to keep the little ones busy and entertained as well as intellectually stimulated:

Crafts: While most crafts are difficult with the 7/8 month age group (since they want to put everything in their mouths) salt dough ornaments are easy to make and with all natural simple ingredients it isn't a big deal if they put it in their mouth.

Art: As I mentioned above babies put everything in their mouths, so traditional finger painting is out. However finger painting with baby food purees is in! If you don't mind getting a little messy, let them finger paint on their high chair table with puree!

Peek-a-Boo: At this age babies are learning about object permanence. (Have you noticed your baby repeatedly dropping things and waiting for you to pick them up? They are starting to learn that things don't disappear when they are out of sight.) Take a small toy and put it where your baby can see it. Then cover it with a towel. Then pick up the towel to reveal the toy again!

Developmental Toys: The ring stacking toy and stacking cups are great toys for the 7/8 months old. My son hasn't yet figured out the stacking cups, but he does enjoy knocking them down after I build a tower with them.

A few other things to try:

Dance Parties: (play your favorite tunes and let them dance around) OK so our 7/8 month old children aren't dancing around the room yet, but they will enjoy bopping along.

Flash Cards: (with colors, numbers and letters) our little ones are like sponges soaking up all of the information around them and while they won't be singing their ABC's anytime soon it never hurts to start familiarizing them with it.

Story Time: Reading to children at a young age helps develop good readers in the future. Right now my son is really into the touch and feel books.

Salt Dough Ornaments

I saw this on pinterest and had to give it a try (adding some new twists to make it my own). It looked like an easy project I could involve my seven month old in. Turns out it is a very easy craft project that kids of all ages will enjoy being a part of.

Step one: Gather your ingredients
2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
3/4 cup water
food coloring (optional)
peppermint extract (optional)

Step two: Mix everything together (I started with the paddle attachment on my kitchen aid and then switched over to the dough hook and let it mix while I set up the rolling pin, cookie cutters etc.) The dough should not stick to your hands.
Step three: Roll the dough, cut it into any shape/size you like and put at least one hole in it to prevent the dough from bubbling

Step four: Add a foot or hand print

Step five: Bake at 350 for 20-30 minutes, then if you can dehydrate overnight (if you don't have a dehydrator reduce the oven temp to 150 and leave in for a few hours) as the dough cools it will harden.

Step six: Decorate! Add some ribbon or paint on a message.

Notes: I added peppermint extract to try to make the ornament smell like the holidays. The dough smelled nice before it was put in the oven but the finished product doesn't smell. Next time I might try to add an essential oil instead. Also be sure to press hands/feet/paws deep into the dough or it will be hard to see after it is baked.

Meal Planning

At my son's six month check up his pedi told us he can now eat what we eat. She said it is really important for us all to sit down to meals together to establish good eating habits for our son. Well, I am not a three meals a day kind of girl. I eat small meals through out the day, an egg white omelet here, Greek yogurt and fruit there and by the time I get home I don't really want to sit down to a typical dinner (usually at that point I want dessert).

In order to start my son off on the right path I knew I would need to make a change, and with only 30 minutes after we get home to prepare dinner to keep our night time schedule on track I knew I would need to do some planning.

I started by making a chart of what foods I had introduced to my son and have figured out he is not allergic to them. It serves as an easy reference point to be sure I offer him a nice variety during the week.

Then I plot out the week writing new foods in red so they stand out in case we end up with any allergic reactions. I use this form. I also plan out the meals for my hubby and I (with only 30 minutes to make them it helps to look at the plan and put anything that needs to defrost in the fridge the night before.) Some examples from this week for my husband and I include taco soup, pecan crusted tilapia with roasted Parmesan potato, and Skinny Chicken Parm. (I'll post the recipes below) Some examples for my son include carrots and rice, pumpkin with greek yogurt and apple and oatmeal (before we know it he'll be eating chicken parm right along with us).

For baby food prep I steam or roast his fruits/veggies and then blend them, depending on the size of the batch using either a blender (I am super lucky to have gotten a vitamix as a gift) an immersion blender or the magic bullet (I really want the baby bullet but can't justify it since I have the other equipment). Then the purees get popped in ice cube trays (either handy ones with lids pictured below) or a regular ice cube tray wrapped with saran wrap (do not use foil it sticks to the food). As you can see below the cubes are easy to store (though they are starting to get some frost in the Tupperware, I may need to rethink that) and I just put the next day's cubes in the fridge at night and they are ready to go for the day!

Recipes: I am the type of cook who just throws in a little of this and a little of that so forgive me if I am not specific on measurements

Taco Soup:
Chicken Breast, Corn, Black Beans, Tomato, Chicken Stock and Taco Seasoning
Put it all in a crock pot and let it cook all day. The chicken will fall apart when it is done.

Pecan Crusted Tilapia and Parmesan Roasted Potato:
Pecans
Tilapia
Potatoes
Parmesan Cheese
Olive Oil
Other Spices

Simply roll the Tilapia in finely ground Pecans and any other spices you may want to add (rosemary is always nice with pecans) Thinly slice the potato and place it in a bag with a little olive oil some Parmesan cheese and any other spices you want to add. Place both on baking sheets and bake it all for 25 minutes at 350. (Don't forget to use cooking spray under the potatoes or they may stick because of the cheese)

Skinny Chicken Parm:
Chicken Breast
Quinoa Flakes
Tomato Sauce
Parmesan Cheese (optional)

Roll the chicken breasts in the quinoa flakes and give them a quick searing in a frying pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Then place them in a pan with Tomato Sauce on the bottom and add a little more on top of the chicken. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and bake for 20 minutes at 350. I served mine on top of brown rice pasta.

Drunk Gummies

I typically stay away from refined sugars (they make me itchy) but while I was recently visiting my sister I saw a tray of gummy bears in her fridge. When I asked why she kept gummies in the fridge she replied "because they are drunk". I had to give them a try. They were great, you don't even taste the vodka!

Drunken Gummies are super easy to make. All you need are two ingredients: Vodka and Gummy Bears!! Simply put the gummies in a baking dish or Tupperware, cover them in vodka and leave them in the fridge for about a week. As you can see below the gummy on the right has a nice swollen belly full of vodka.

A New Journey

So much has happened since my last post. I became a mommy! The last six months have been a whirl wind of sleepless nights, diaper changes, and bottle washing. My organizing and time management skills have been put to the test. Now that we are finally sleeping through the night I thought I might resurrect the Mrs. Alexandria blog to share lessons learned, things that work well and those that don't as I navigate through this new foreign land.

Lesson 1: If you have a newborn baby boy invest in some wash cloths. I figured this one out after a midnight diaper changing where I ended up with pee in my hair. The washcloth is the perfect shield for the mid-change pee stream.

Stay tuned to see how my meal planning for the week works out, or if our salt dough Christmas ornament project ends up burning down our house.

Last August I was on vacation with my family and my mom told me that she changed her eating habits and as a result had less headaches and more energy. I had been plagued by migraines, exhaustion and eczema for years. I also had to take beta blockers for mitral valve prolapse and medication for the migraines. I thought changing the way I ate would allow me to feel better as well.

As soon as we returned from our trip I cut gluten and refined sugar from my diet (I have never really been a caffeine drinker so that was cut out as well). Within the first month I began to have a little more energy and most of the itching from the eczema was gone.

In October, for my birthday, I decided to splurge on gluten free brownies and ice cream. The result was awful as I spent the next two weeks with eczema on my neck, arms and legs. BYE BYE Sugar! I learned my lesson.

For Thanksgiving we visited my parents. At one meal I was eating oven baked french fries as part of the meal. Halfway through the meal I commented on how tired I was getting. My mom suggested that perhaps the white potato was the culprit. So bye, bye white potato and white rice. (Thank goodness for Brown Rice and Sweet Potato!)

The results over the last few months has been crazy... I am no longer on any medication and am like the energizer bunny. I have cleaned out and re-organized my house, expanded my dog treat business, created websites for two Artists and I have a full-time job. I feel great, I rarely get headaches, my skin is non-itchy and in great condition and my hair and nails are long and strong.

You may be thinking, what do I eat... In addition to fruits, veggies, chicken, fish and dairy, I have found some fantastic substitutes to help satisfy any food craving I have come across. First I highly recommend fruit leather. I always loved Twizzlers and fruit leather makes a great substitute. I even ventured to make my own (recipe below). I also found Agave nectar to be a great sweetener (artificial sweeteners like NutraSweet, Splenda, etc. have always given me headaches and are not an option for me) and used it yesterday to make chocolate ice cream (more info below)!! As for wanting bread, there are some decent Gluten free breads on the market and stores like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are really helpful for people with dietary restrictions. Right now I am obsessed with Brown Rice Tortillas and use them for so many things.

The important part of making a change like this is to read labels. You can't begin to imagine where sugar and wheat hide. Did you know soy sauce contains wheat, or that some tomato sauces have sugar? Luckily there are brands out there that make them without.

You may want to know if I have lost weight... when I first started eating this way I lost a few pounds, but my body has stabilized and seems to be at a happy weight for my body type. I am also constantly asked if it is hard to watch other people eat what I can't and to avoid the things I can't eat. I always tell them if this was just a diet for me it would be really easy to cheat, but after what happened during my birthday and the way my body reacted to eating the sugar I know these are things my body can't process and is essentially allergic too. It is really easy to not want food when you know it makes you sick.

Recipes!

Apple Sauce/ Fruit Leather
1 bag apples (use your personal favorite)
3 Cinnamon Sticks
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
dash of vanilla

Start by coring and peeling the apples. Then cut them in large chunks. Place them in a pot with more than enough water to cover the bottom of the pot. Cover the pot and simmer the apples with the cinnamon sticks until the apples are soft. Remove the apples from the heat and allow them to cool. Transfer the apples to a food processor or blender and blend until smooth with the ground cinnamon and vanilla. Once everything is blended you can you as apple sauce (which I think is super tasty in Greek Yogurt) or transfer to a dehydrator to turn it into fruit leather!

Chocolate Ice Cream sweetened with Agave - I have to give all of the credit for this one to David Lebovitz. Follow the link for the recipe I used and mentioned earlier. Personally I added a bit more agave than was mentioned in the recipe, but that is just me.

Fun Dog Show

It is that time of year again!!The Fun Dog Show is fast approaching. Last year the Fun Dog Show was a busy day for me.

Since I have recently accepted a new job at The Health Management Academy, I won't be managing the Fun Dog Show this year, but I will be participating as a vendor! I am really excited to be able to sell Aunt Sasha's Barked Goods which are my homemade dog treats. I am even going to donate $1 from each bag of treats to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

The Fun Dog Show is being held at Market Square in Old Town, Alexandria on Saturday March 6 starting at 10am and is followed by the St. Patrick's Day Parade. I hope to see you there!

I have said so long to 2009 and am working hard to make 2010 the best year ever. I am taking a year off from the pageant world and am focusing on career, friends and family.

I have been hard at work creating and promoting two companies.

The first Aunt Sasha's Barked Goods is an all-natural dog treat company. I am currently looking to find retailers to carry my treats. I am also keeping the dog world updated through my Barked Goods Twitter.

The second company is The Lipstick Artist. My super talented mom has been creating unique pieces of art through pottery, glass work, knitting, painting and welding and The Lipstick Artist website is the perfect place for her to share her work and allow others to enjoy it and even purchase a few select pieces (like Jazz Blues featured above). I am keeping the art world updated on The Lipstick Artist Twitter.

I am also ecstatic to be joining the team at The Academy on 2/1/10.

I have recently become involved with a wonderful organization called PAL. People Animals Love is an organization where volunteer dogs and their volunteer owners are out and about bringing the superhuman power of animals to nursing homes and treatment programs, to the lonely and the sick, and to others who need the amazingly therapeutic, miraculously curative and positively uplifting powers of a cold wet nose.

On the first Saturday of every month at Pohick Library children have the opportunity to read to some of the PAL dogs. This month Remy joined the group, met some wonderful children and had a great time hearing stories like Bad Kitty and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid!

PAL recently held a canine cruise as a thank you to all of their volunteers. Lacy and I joined the group for a fun cruise on the Potomac River. Lacy helped by acting as captain!

Several times each year PAL will hold Yappy Hours as fundraisers. Below are photos from the last Yappy Hour at Chef Geoff. The next Yappy Hour will be held on Wednesday August 26th at Chef Geoff.

Paws, Purrs and Exotics Animal Hospital holds a Grand Opening

On Saturday July 18th, 2009 Paws, Purrs and Exotics Animal Hospital will be holding its Grand Opening. The event will benefit the Washington Humane Society, which will have adoptable animals at the event.

Local dog friendly vendors including Hotel Monaco, Baskin Robbins, Karing by Kristina and Barkley Square Bakery have partnered with the Animal Hospital for a day full of fun, education, and free giveaways!

“We are bringing those whose businesses serve animals in our community together to celebrate our opening and to raise funds for the Washington Humane Society”, said owner Dr. Elton Vyfhuis. I have supported the WHS for years by volunteering performing surgeries for them at their National Capital Area Spay & Neuter Center, and am excited that the first event at our new hospital will support the great work that the Washington Humane Society does in our community."

DIVAs Night Out

In 2006 Maimah Karmo was diagnosed with Breast Cancer at 32 years old. She had no history of breast cancer in her family and when she told her doctor she felt a lump, she was told not to worry. Six months later the lump doubled in size and she began her journey to fight her breast cancer. "If you are under 40, you are your own best advocate against breast cancer. You need to be aware of self examination and integrate prevention into your lifestyle" said Maimah.

During her second round of chemotherapy, with her then three year old daughter Noel at her bedside, Maimah decided to start the Tigerlilly Foundation. She says "as hard as it was, I decided I could live during and after breast cancer and I wanted to use this challenge as a positive catalyst."

Noel, now 6, is her mom's biggest cheerleader and says "sometimes people can't find anyone to listen and my mommy is there to listen."

The Tigerlilly Foundation held its First Annual DIVAs night out at the Fairfax Marriott on June 25, 2009. Guests were greeted by Maimah (pictured above) and an overflowing swag bag. The swag bags included discounts on spa services, delicious smelling soaps and lip glosses, jewelry, pink knit scarfs and so much more. The most important piece of the swag bag was a pamphlet on how to do a self breast examination.

Located in the atrium was every DIVAs favorite... shopping! Vendors included Tomboy tools (pictured above) Cookie Lee Jewelery and KuraDesign Handbags to name a few. Guests also enjoyed pampering with manicures and massages.
After the shopping, guests enjoyed a mother and daughter runway show. The moms wore designs by Ellen Dunbar Designs, Studio Demaxsi by Afua Sam and MNG. The daughters wore MNG by Mango. (shown above by Noel and a friend)
One of the highlights of the evening was a speech by Vernice Armour. (photo above) Vernice is the first African-American Female Fighter Pilot!!! She was a an entertaining and inspirational speaker, teaching the crowd that "a break through mentality leads to a break through life."
The evening concluded with several raffle items including a KuraDesign handbag commissioned especially for this event. (The lucky winner is pictured above with the handbag).

Upcoming Events to benefit Cats, K9s and Kids

Join the Washington Humane Society on Wednesday July 1st for a Purrfectly Patriotic Cat Adoption Event at their New York Avenue Shelter.

Dogtopia of Alexandria is hosting a K9 dog wash to support police dogs on Sunday July 19th. A few years ago tragedy struck in Prince William County when a working K9 was accidentally shot by a fellow police officer who did not realize that it was a police K9. To help prevent this from happening in Alexandria, this fund raiser will go towards the purchase of tracking harnesses for all of the Alexandria Police K-9's. These harnesses clearly identify the canines as police K9's and are complete with police badges. The harness also have an infra-red light that can be tracked by a helicopter. The harnesses will let everyone know they are police K9's and will hopefully ensure that a tragic accident will not happen in Alexandria.

On Wednesday, July 29 the city's VIP will be seen at the W hotel for the Wednesday Warm-up for KEENfest. KEEN is a national, nonprofit volunteer-led organization that provides one-to-one exercise and recreational opportunities for children & young adults with developmental and physical disabilities. The New Dining Hot Spot is Zentan

Located in the Donovan House, a Thompson Hotel, is the ultra hip Asian eatery Zentan. Located at 1115 14th St in NW DC, this is the place to see and be seen. Zentan offers a cozy dining room where it is likely "everyone knows your name".

Renowned Chef Susar Lee has created a menu that tempts the eyes and tickles the taste buds. When you arrive, ask the bartender for a Spicy Thai Martini. The pink drink complete with crystallized ginger is a delicious blend of Belevedere vodka, Thai spices and cranberry juice leave your palate sweet, warm and prepared for an amazing meal.

The sushi selection is unique and full of flavor, I recommend trying the Fire Dragon which consists of spicy tuna, barbecue eel avocado and tobiko.

If you follow my recommendation and have started your evening with the Spicy Thai Martini followed by the Fire Dragon sushi roll, you may want to cool things down with the Singapore Slaw. This salad has over 20 ingredients which compliment each other perfectly.

For an appetizer you have to try the Almond Crusted Lobster and Shrimp Dumpling Lettuce Wrap followed by the Sauteed Scallops as an entree.

After you are full, adjourn with a nightcap (perhaps the Absinthe Sangria, complete with sugar cube) to the roof top pool. If they filmed The Hills in DC this would surely be a favorite!

A Day in DC

Living in DC it is easy to forget all of the wonderful and most of the time free things we have to do right in our own backyard. On a recent Sunday, my husband and I had an inexpensive and fun adventure.

We started our day stopping by the Italian Store for a Baguette and some cheese. We spent less than $10 and we got to enjoy our picnic on the lawn of the Iwo Jima Memorial.

We then went next door to stroll around Arlington Cemetery.

Finally we hopped across the river to spend the afternoon at the National Zoo.

I really enjoyed being able to spend a beautiful day outdoors with my husband and my Canon SLR

Summer Swing Under the Stars

Not only is Andrea Rodgers of AskMissA.com a marketing and PR guru she is a philanthropist who started the non-profit The Courage Cup to benefit at-risk urban youth.

Annually The Courage Cup organization hosts the Meadow Matches a Polo match held in Virginia. This year due to the strain on the economy the Meadow Match event is being put on hold. This event brings together the Washington Polo community, The Corporate Sector and the Philanthropic Community to support Work to Ride, the First African-American polo program designed to help at-risk urban youth. The Work to Ride program provides disadvantaged urban youth with constructive activities centered around horsemanship, equine sports, and education.

"Especially in this time of economic insecurity, many may question why the children are taught to ride horses and play polo. They do not understand that the children in the Work to Ride program enjoy riding and working with horses, and benefit from being a part of a program which supports them, encourages them, and teaches the skills they need to succeed in life. Through the program they learn teamwork, a strong work ethic, passion, goal setting, and they are required to keep their grades up in school. As with many other sports, polo gives these children lessons in life," said Andrea Rodgers, CEO and Chairwoman of The Courage Cup.

In an effort to continue raising funds and bring awareness to programs like Work to Ride, The Courage Cup Leadership Committee will host Summer Swing Under the Stars at AKA White House, 1710 H Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20006.

Tickets cost $30 per person, and benefit The Courage Cup, an IRS designated 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation which was established to help at-risk urban youth. We support programs in the mid-Atlantic region which give disadvantaged children individualized attention and a positive alternative activity to keep them in school and off the streets.

The "Pupperazzi" was out in full force Saturday night, enjoying the area's premier Black Tie event in honor of those with four paws on the floor. About 900 dog-lovers showed up in their tuxes at the Capitol Hilton for The Bark Ball, the highly-woofed-about annual benefit for the Washington Humane Society. The event raised about $250,000. This pageant is directed by Moore Pageant Productions which is the same company that puts on the Mrs. Virginia and Mrs. Delaware United States Pageants. The always lovely Siouxzan Nalley Moore did another amazing job and is photographed above with the winners.

Building a Wall

Steve and I have always thought our front yard needed some landscaping help. The first row was the most difficult because each stone has to be level.

The next row was a bit easier.

Luckily we only had to break one of the stones in half. Our neighbor gave us a great tip about putting a small stone underneath to make it easier to break.

We had to fill in with dirt after each level was complete. Lucky for us we saved the dirt we dug out to make room for the first row.

Almost there!

Finally the wall is built. We still need to finish filling it in and add some landscaping.
We got it filled in and added some flowers. We still need to add more flowers. Stay tuned to see the final product!

Gone Green: Garden Update

Our garden is already starting to grow! Luckily, we have had a lot of rain which has helped move things along. This is a photo of the sugar snap peas.

The dogs are a little sad to have lost some of their potty space, but they are adjusting nicely to only using one side of the yard.

For my on-stage question in the Mrs. Virginia United States 2009 pageant I was asked "President Obama has just finished his first 100 days in office. What advice do you have for him?" My response was to "Go Green. If we create an industry around wind and solar power we can create millions of jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign oil."

This question has had me thinking about what I can do to Go Green. My husband and I recently began bringing canvas bags with us to the grocery store for packaging our groceries (which we found out actually gets you a refund at some stores), we change our air filter regularly and turn off lights when we leave the room. This weekend we decided to start our own fruit and veggie garden! I will be photographing the process along the way to share the fruits :) of our labor.

Our garden (pictured above) has a few tomato plants and the rest is starting from seeds. We planted watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumbers, snap peas, green beans, bell peppers and spinach.

Last night was my favorite event of the year, the White House Correspondents Dinner Parties. It is so much fun to see Hollywood descend on the Potomac to mix and mingle with Politicos and Pundits. This year my husband Steve and I were guests of Congressional Quarterly.

I came in as second runner up and I won the Community Service Award! The Mrs. Virginia United States Pageant was an amazing experience. (I think I am going to enter again for 2010!) All of the contestants were amazing women and I hope to see them all again soon.

CrisisLink and the Little Black Dress Club

Last Wednesday I volunteered at CrisisLink's Link up and Listen Gala, held at the Clarendon Ballroom. I found out about this great organization and volunteer opportunity through the Little Black Dress Club.

CrisisLink saves lives and prevents tragedies. They give vital support to those facing life crises, trauma and suicide, and provide information, education and links to community resources to empower people to help themselves.

The Little Black Dress Club is a community of interesting and adventurous women who enjoy a variety of activities. The members host events from casual happy hours and gourmet dinners to rock climbing and SCUBA diving. Their mission is to create a worldwide community so as women move or travel, there will always be a friend to share an occasion.

The other volunteers and I acted as Auction Guards. We helped with the silent auction and helped the Gala-goers with any questions they had about the auction items. Over $50,000 was raised at the event!

Every pet owner has questions about their pet. Why do they do what they do, and what are they thinking. This especially can hold true for adopted pets. Often times we adopt pets when they are older and don’t always get a 360 degree view of their past. I know when I adopted my dog Remy, I was told he was 100% long haired Chihuahua. Well, since he doesn’t look 100%, I had his DNA tested. While the results were inconclusive they showed trace amounts of Pomeranian and Chesapeake Bay retriever! Needless to say I am unable to attribute his behaviors to a specific breed. So, where does one turn to get the answers they need?

For those of you who have not heard, Karing by Kristina has partnered with Chios Pet Grooming for Tidy Tuesdays. Every Tuesday from 9-5 Chios will be parked in front of Barkley Square to provide grooming services!

My Maltese, Lacy was long over due for a haircut. She is a bit of a tomboy, so I like to keep her hair short. Lacy is also a bit of, well, lets just say a challenge. She tends to think that the groomers of the world are out to get her and she likes to defend herself. From the moment Nery, the professional groomer, came to get her she seemed more at ease than ever before. I was suprised as I handed her off that she didn’t even growl at him.

When Lacy returned I was amazed at how white her fur was. Her cut was perfect and she smells delicious! Check out the photos below and be sure to sign up for Tidy Tuesday ASAP. Now that the secret is out, spots will fill up fast.

Blue Jeans Ball 2009

I had the honor of being a "Celebrity" Guest Chef at this year's Blue Jeans Ball. I put the term celebrity in quotes because I am not quite sure I fit the bill as a celebrity and the term makes me want to blush. (A special thank you to Marianne Ricci of Faith 2 Reality Productions for getting me involved with this great cause)

The Blue Jeans Ball benefits the Capital Area Food Bank. I was surprised to learn that over 600,000 DC residents are at risk of hunger and that over 200,000 of them are children. CAFB aids the community through programs like Hunger Lifeline, Kids Cafe and Food for Thought. Every little bit donated to CAFB really does help, $1 will provide for 3 meals.

As a Guest Chef I was paired with Vidalia and Bistro Bis. I am pictured below with Ted, Executive Sous Chef from Bistro Bis; Joesph, Executive Chef from Bistro Bis and Joesph's wife Katie from Vermillion in Alexandria. The wonderful team of chefs prepared a Vidalia Onion Vichy Soisse with Lump Crab Meat, a Squid Ink Tuille and a dash of Old Bay Oil.

Other participating restaurants included Agraria, Art & Soul, Hello Cupcake, Jackson 20, On the Fly, The Melting Pot and Vapiano among others.

Another familiar face at the event and Celebrity Guest Chef was Kate Marie Grinold, Miss DC!

Contestant Orientation

The Mrs. Virginia Contestant Orientation was held on Saturday in Winchester, Virginia. I really enjoyed meeting seven of the other contestants I will be competing with on May 2 for the title of Mrs. Virginia. Four of the contestants were unable to join us and I look forward to meeting them and learning about their platforms.

I had so much fun on my hour and a half drive both to and from Winchester. The weather was great and I was able to spend the time singing my favorite show tunes and Disney songs.

It is hard to believe the pageant is only four weeks away. I have several sessions left with my trainer Joselle from Fitness Together. I can already see a huge difference in my overall muscle tone and I have so much more energy.

The past 4 months as Mrs. Alexandria has been so much fun, I have had some wonderful opportunities and have met some amazing people. I am really looking forward to what the rest of 2009 holds :)

The 6th Annual Blue Jeans Ball is being held Sunday, April 5th, at the Washington Convention Center.

The Blue Jeans Ball is one of Washington's most exciting and unique annual charitable events. It is Capital Area Food Bank's largest special event fundraiser that strives to raise awareness and dollars in the struggle to end hunger.

Ranked as one of Washington's Top 100 Events by Biz Bash, the evening will consist of a moving feast with fine cuisine provided by the region's top chefs, entertainment by Posh Band, and live and silent auctions offering incredible treasures.

I have been asked to attend as a "Guest Chef" and I will be partnered with one of the wonderful local restaurants to assist them with their demonstration. Grab your best jeans, and join me on Sunday to support a great cause!

The Washington Humane Society really knows how to throw a party! This year’s Fashion for Paws was held at the Italian Embassy and through the hard work of the WHS staff, fundraising models (through direct donations and ticket sales) and sponsors raised over $240,000.

I arrived at 6pm to start preparing for the festivities. I was immediately greeted by WHS volunteers who offered to help me with my Maltese, Lacy. Want to read more....check out the rest of the article on the Examiner.com

Meet Howie!

Howie is a super adorable 3y.o. Hound mix who was found wandering in the Carter Barron Morrow Drive area. Howie is a super social little guy who LOVES touch and loves to put his paws on you. Tolerant and friendly with people and a little shy with other dogs, Howie will benefit from additional socialization and confidence-building in his new forever home. He'd also do best in a home without any kitties. Like most Beagles, he does know how to howl and because of this is likely not the ideal pup for apartment dwellers! Howie is full grown at about 45lbs....

On Tuesday night I hosted Rock and Roll for Fido with Andrea Rodgers. Andrea and I are both raising money for the Washington Humane Society's Fashion for Paws event. We committed to raising $3000 each for the opportunity to walk on the runway during the Fashion for Paws event.

I am happy to announce that both Andrea and I have hit our goal. I was able to raise funds through direct donations, in-kind sponsorships (which are not reflected on my fundraising page) and funds raised at the Rock and Roll for Fido event.

This year I will be rocking the runway with my Maltese, Lacy, by my side. (Remy has opted to sit out of this event, he says he has had enough of the puparazzi and would prefer a quiet evening at home)

A Dog Show, A Parade and A Pageant

Saturday, March 7th was a busy day in the life of Mrs. Alexandria! I started the day early preparing for the Fun Dog Show. The Fun Dog Show is an annual fundraising event for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. I along with Team Karing by Kristina and Barkley Square host the event at Market Square in Old Town Alexandria. This year sponsors for the event included NOVA Dog Magazine, Dogtopia of Alexandria, Nature's Select DC, Paws and Claws Photography, Paws, Purrs and Exotics Animal Hospital as well as several others all raising money for the AWLA. I am happy to announce that we raised $1500 this year which is almost double the amount raised last year!

My next stop was the St. Patrick's Day Parade. This event is hosted by the Ballyshaners who began the parade tradition and the Fun Dog Show 28 years ago. I had a fun time riding in the parade in my car sponsored by Karing by Kristina.
My final stop for the day was the Miss Alexandria pageant. I was the official dressing room hostess. I spent the evening helping the contestants with outfit changes, safety pins, top stick and eyelashes! I am pictured above with ErikaThomas, Miss Alexandria 2009!

Rock and Roll for Fido and Val Kilmer

The Washington Humane Society has just announced Actor, Val Kilmer, will now be an Honorary Chair of Fashion for Paws, joining Honorary Chairs NBC’s Luke Russert, Animal Planet’s Victoria Stilwell and DC Council member, Jack Evans. The Mistress of Cermonies will be Pamela Sorenson.

Tickets to the event are still available through my fundraising campaign here. A donation of $75 or more will purchase your ticket.

As a kick off to the Fashion for Paws event I am hosting a fundraiser with fellow fundraising model Andrea Rodgers. Please join us for Rock and Roll for Fido on Tuesday, March 10 from 7-11pm at Tattoo Bar.

We are asking for a $10 donation at the door. There will be drink specials throughout the evening and free champagne for the ladies starting at 10pm.

Fitness Together

It is hard to believe I have been working out with my personal trainer, Joselle Gacusan, at Fitness Together for a month! Typically a month into a fitness program I am ready to hang up my sneakers and crawl back into bed, however the fun workouts Joselle designs specifically for my personal goals and her encouragement have me looking forward to the next workout.

Fitness Together is located 300 N. Washington St in Alexandria, VA. Their moto is 1 Client, 1 Trainer, 1 Goal. What a great concept, each session is conducted in your own room, so there is no waiting for equipment or self conscious moments.

After only a month I have more energy, my clothes are fitting better, my posture is improving and I am seeing results! I am so happy to have Fitness Together on my side because the Mrs. Virginia swimsuit competition is right around the corner.

Shelter Dogs go to the Movies

On Saturday January 31, I attended "Shelter Dogs go to the Movies" to benefit the Animal Welfare League of Arlington. The shelter partnered with Regal Cinemas at the Ballston Mall to hold this event in conjunction with the movie "Hotel for Dogs." Barkley Square Bakery, Karing by Kristina and Dogtopia were on hand to give movie goers dog treats to bring home as well as information on Pet Care.

What is Fashion for Paws?

Fashion for Paws infuses the nation’s capital with cutting edge high fashion, drawing an extraordinary crowd of VIP’s, fashion and animals lovers alike. The fashion show and fund raising event features sixty of Washington, DC’s most notable personalities as the models on the runway. Models on two-legs will be dressed in ready-to-wear spring ‘09, while those on four-legs will model ready-to-wag spring ’09.

When is Fashion for Paws?

On March 28, 2009 from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. the 3^rd annual Fashion for Paws® event will take place at the Embassy of Italy to benefit the Washington Humane Society (WHS). Tickets will be $75 per person (standing), VIP $150 per person (seated), and VIP tables will be $2000. This year’s Honorary Chair will be Luke Russert, and the Emcee will be Pamela Sorensen. 'Tis the Season

The holidays are a great time to reflect on what the year has brought us and what goals we have for the upcoming year. It is also a great time to help those in need. There are so many little things we can all do to help those around us.

This year my husband and I chose to make a donation to the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation. As we were bringing out the winter coats and putting away things from warmer weather we noticed several items of clothing, sporting equipment and small electronics we no longer use. We bagged it all up and gave it to Purple Heart. Hopefully this small act will make a difference for someone who needs it.

Haute Holidays for the Hounds

This past Sunday I attended "Haute Holidays for the Hounds" to benefit the Washington Humane Society. The event was held at Bloomingdales in Chevy Chase. For a donation of $15 participants were able to take a holiday photo with Santa or Frosty the Snowman.

The human participants were treated to cupcakes from Hello Cupcake and the Dogs were treated to Yummy treats from B arkley Square Bakery .

A Grooming Station to spruce up before the photos was provided by Karing by Kristina. The event was a great success and fun was had by all!

Lorraine Aprile Salon

The Lorraine Aprile Salon is located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. Located in a beautiful Victorian home that dates back to the 1830's. The staff at the Lorraine Aprile Salon make you feel welcome the moment you walk in the door. From the complimentary coffee to the warm fireplace the salon is a wonderful escape from the stresses of everyday life.

I had the pleasure of working with Lorraine and Jessica for my Mrs. Alexandria makeover. As you can see above they made wonderful decisions about my color and cut and executed them brilliantly.

Holiday Tea

Friday I attended a Holiday Tea at Ann Hand to benefit Innocents at Risk. The event was hosted by Kate M arie Grinold, Miss DC.

Kate Marie will be competing at the Miss America Pageant this January! Her platform is "Raising Awareness of Human Trafficking".

For this event we were asked to bring gifts for teens ages 11-17. The gift requests were for very basic things we all take for granted, to help make their Christmas a little special. The children we brought gifts for are survivors of commercial sexual exploitation.

Innocents at Risk is a 501 (c) (3) that is working to put an end to child sexual exploitation and modern-day slavery.

Pet Photos with Santa

Last weekend Barkley Square hosted Pet Photos with Santa to benefit the Washington Humane Society. The event was a blast and everyone who came had a memorable experience and got a photo to keep for the memories!

If you missed this past weekend's event you can join us this Sunday, December 14th – 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Bloomingdale’s, Chevy Chase, Haute Holidays for the Hounds to benefit WHS. With a $15 donation to WHS celebrate your canine best friend and the holidays, by pampering your pooch with gourmet cookies and holiday photos. I will be there with one of Barkley’s Famous Bark Bars and a grooming station to pamper your pooch.

Stress Reduction

One of my sponsors for the upcoming Mrs. Virginia United States 2009 Pageant is Isobreathing. Isobreathing is able to help me in my pageant preperation because in addition to several fitness DVDs, Owner and Creator, Ellen Miller (pictured above), has developed a Total Body Relaxation CD.

As I am preparing for the upcoming competition, working full time, caring for my husband and pets as well as working with the local animal shelters, I find stress can easily creep into my life. Listening to the 15 minute Total Body Relaxation CD helps ease my tension and reduce my stress level.

Earlier today I had the pleasure of listening to Ellen (who by the way is my mom) speak about stress reduction on Blog Talk Radio with The Coffee Lady. The conversation and some secrets to relaxation can be heard here.

Scottish Walk Marketplace to benefit The Campagna Center

I just finished taking a walk around the beautiful Masonic Temple and checked out all of the great vendors at the Scottish Walk Marketplace. 18% of all sales from this weekend will be donated to The Campagna Center.

I have to mention that Barkley Square and Karing by Kristina had a wonderful display designed by our friend Joyce Frank. Barkley is selling Holiday Dog Treats, Scottish Kilts, Doggie Bling, Juicy Couture, dog beds and more. (see picture above with owner Kristina Robertson)

Fashion for Paws Event

Recently, I attended an event hosted by Capitol File Magazine at the Tommy Hilfiger store in Georgetown. A portion of the evening's purchases went to support the Washington Humane Society's Fashion for Paws Event. Fashion for Paws will be held this year Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the Embassy of Italy 3000 Whitehaven St NW Washington, DC 20008.

Last year my company Barkley Square outfitted all of the doggie models at the Fashion for Paws event.

At Tommy Hilfiger I noticed some very cute Argyle sweaters which are a perfect match for the doggie argyle sweater we have at Barkley Square.

The event was a great success and we ran into several old friends as well as made some new ones, including Advisory Chair for Fashion for Paws, Tara DeNicolas; Miss DC, Kate Marie Grinold; Miss Teen DC, Jasmine Alexis; Katherine Kennedy and Andy Baldwin.
